We were privileged to explore the site where the new Museum of London is to be built, at the western end of Smithfield Market.
The architects (Stanton Williams and Asif Khan) have been chosen, their ideas sketched out – to create a museum for a city that has been at the epicentre of trade, culture and the arts for centuries. .
Touring the old City of London salt stores, the refrigerating chambers under the meat market, the disused former Fish Market and General Market; it is almost impossible to see how these can be transformed into a vibrant 21st century museum by 2022. But the sense of excitement from the museum team is palpable, and this is a fitting use of a truly special part of the fabric of London.
Here are a couple of shots of what the Museum’s new atrium currently looks like – and what it will become. You can see the scale of the challenge but what a wonderful opportunity to create a world-class museum for a world-class city.
